Bird Flu

Bird Flu, also known as avian influenza, is a viral infection that can infect not only birds but also humans and other animals. H5N1 and H7N9 are the most common types that have infected some people during outbreaks in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and parts of Europe.

Most people who get bird flu have had close contact with infected birds or surfaces contaminated by the birds' saliva, mucous or droppings. It is very rare for the virus to spread from one person to another. It may also be possible to catch bird flu by eating poultry or eggs that are not well-cooked.

Bird flu illness in people can range from mild to severe. In some cases, bird flu can cause serious complications and death. Often, the symptoms are the similar to the common seasonal flu. People who are at higher risk of contracting bird flu include pregnant women, people with a weak immune system and seniors aged 65 and older. However, the risk can be minimised by avoiding open-air markets and contact with infected birds. Washing hands frequently also minimises the risk of contamination.
